Chapter 9

Exodus Celebration

Traven could see that Vonen’s very face was ready to burst with questions. He put his finger to his lips and continued to follow Victor Sonoa outside into the antechamber. Sonoa breezed past the sergeant and kept walking. Once Traven told the Sergeant of Arms that Victor had resigned from the company, Sergeant Bowles told Traven he would take it from there and took off down the hall. Traven went back into the holding room with Vonen and shut the door.

“Well? What happened?”

“I beat him in a duel!”

“Holy crap!” The brothers high-fived.

“It gets better…” Traven paused for effect.

“Well?”

“Wait for it…”

Vonen grabbed Traven’s shoulders and started shaking. “I’m going kill you!”

“Mother’s CEO, and she fired Sonoa’s ass!”

Vonen came off the ground. “BOOM-YOW!” He started fist-pumping while turning full circle upon landing. Traven just laughed at his brother’s flight path. “Oh, my goddess, Bro! That’s so awesome!” Then Vonen grabbed his side. “Oh, shit! I think I popped a rib!” That caused both of them to bust out laughing, except Vonen was starting to tear-up at the same time.

The door opened, and the twins abruptly stopped laughing as members of the board passed through the antechamber. Not one of them glanced their way. After the board members had all gone past them, Traven looked through the open door of the board room and saw a man he recognized as Ben Trowler still talking closely with his mother. “It looks like Mother has an ally,” thought Traven. Cassandra looked over at her sons and asked Ben if she could have a few moments of privacy. Ben gave a slight bow, excused himself, and left the room. Cassandra indicated for the twins to enter the board room. Once the door closed, she said quietly, “The walls have ears.”

“Who cares? It’s win-win. You’re CEO!” said Vonen as he hugged his mother, and then Traven was next.

“I can’t believe it! Not one thing screwed up!”

Cassandra smiled. “Here, come; sit with me.”

“Are you kidding me? We have to party!” exclaimed Vonen.

“I’m afraid that will have to wait. You do want me to take Pike’s money back, don’t you?”

“Oh, hell, yes. You’re talking about his stock options, aren’t you?” asked Vonen.

“Yes, that’s correct. Pike’s estate won’t be getting millions from us.”

Vonen hopped two steps over to the huge twenty-foot wide bay window and fist-pumped the sky. “Yes!”

Cassandra smiled and sat down with Traven. He saw her relax for the first time in days.

“This is a complete win for us, isn’t it?” he asked.

Cassandra sighed. “Complex is more the word. Six hours ago I would not have thought it possible for such a vindication.” Vonen came over and took a seat. Cassandra continued, saying, “The health of the company is now much safer and stronger than before.”

“You were awesome. Father will be very proud. Oh, my God, I need to text everyone.” Traven patted his pocket. “Crap, Vonen, my phone,” he said, extending his hand to his brother. Vonen pulled out two phones he had for safekeeping.
